We offer a two-year confirmation class for youth ages 13-16, where students explore their own faith, grow in their sense of community, and develop a deeper appreciation for justice and service in the world.
Led by the pastor, this class incorporates Bible study, videos, art activities, discussions, field trips, and service projects to help youth explore their understandings of God, the church, themselves, their values, and their role in the wider world. As part of the confirmation program, each youth chooses an adult member of the congregation as a mentor. Forming this relationship is an important part of the confirmation process.
During their program, confirmands also have the opportunity to participate in the Our Whole Lives Comprehensive Sexuality Curriculum. Created by the United Church of Christ and Unitarian Universalist Association, Our Whole Lives helps youth explore sexuality development, identity, and behavior through the context of faith. The curriculum provides not only facts but helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the social, emotional and spiritual aspects of sexuality. The confirmation program culminates with a service of blessing, where confirmands write and share their statements of faith. Each confirmand receives a blessing, and those who chose may be confirmed into the Christian faith as an adult member of the community. All students are affirmed and honored as part of this service.
